October 21, 2016

--Gainesville, Alabama: Population 201¹

The Gainesville Health Fair on October 14, 2016 was a success!

Gainesville, Alabama is a picturesque but medically underserved area just south of Tuscaloosa where a significant need of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dental services has been demonstrated.

At 8:00 Saturday morning there was already a 40 person line outside the door, despite other local festivities! Early registration took place and while the patients waited, they were able to peruse the various NEW START themed booths and be educated about Nutrition, Exercise, the importance of Water, Sunshine, Temperance, fresh Air, proper Rest and most importantly, Trust in God.

Songs and raffle prizes were offered at random. Prizes included donated groceries, cosmetic supplies, coupons and restaurant vouchers, and other donations from Super Dollar, Lifeway Christian Bookstore, and Barnes & Noble.

Services offered included:

  • Flu Vaccine

  • Pap Smears

  • Mammogram

  • Vouchers

  • Blood Pressure

  • Diabetes Screening

  • Massages

  • Disease Prevention Seminars

 The event outcomes were:

  • 45 guests

  • 24 dental extraction requests

  • 11 dental screenings

  • 21 blood pressure and glucose screenings

  • 17 massages

  • 245 volunteer hours

  • 91 pro bono hours

Total Economic Impact: 19,422.20²

The need and receptiveness demonstrated by the people of the Gainesville community and the surrounding areas affirmed the mission, and assured a follow-up health fair in the near future! We would like to thank our partners- Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital, Rite-Aide Whatley Health Services West AL Food Bank- and sponsors-Market Place Store, Piggly Wiggly, Super Dollar, Custom Ink, Office Depot, and ABO Pharmaceuticals. We would also like to extend a special thanks to the medical staff and non-medical volunteers; to Dentist Belinda Rhodes, Dr. Marlo Paul, Nurses Lisa Williams and Victor Pile, and Pharmacist Whitney Scott for volunteering their professional services, and to Mallory Sullivan, organizer of the event.
