Firsthand report from Anthony Paul, Ph.D. in Haiti
President of The National Association for the Prevention of Starvation (NAPS)
As you have been seeing on TV, and through our updates and photos, the situation in Haiti is desperate. At this time, gas is available and the people are moving to the countryside--sick or well. We are now moving into the mountains to reach people that were affected by the earthquake but are unable to reach the centers for help.
We are seeing more and more how very important it is to respond immediately. When we reached here, the hospitals had no medication. We were able to supply a clinic and a hospital with our supplies. Due to the endless need, the supplies were finished after two days.
It is the mercies of God that it has not rained here since the earthquake. If this should happened soon--heaven save us. Many people would certainly die. The sick would be in the rain because most hospitals are closed or destroyed. The possibility of a widespread cholera outbreak would be more certain. Pray for Haiti.
Jeff has found his father and they are reunited! The Lord has blessed us through this. His dad has provided a van and we were able to get diesel fuel, quite miraculously each time. Now we have more than enough and are able to respond to all our obligations. There is enough relief here--more than enough. However, the difficulty is in distribution.
We have a very good blend of personnel here. There are many Spanish-speaking individuals here. Francisco assists us with that. Jeff, Woolky, Jean, Marissa, and I take care of the Creole translation issues.
We have had no security problems. We have been welcomed everywhere we have gone without any security. Jeff, Woolky, Dr. Hodnett and I went up into the mountains to reach people that were trapped and in desperate need of medical care. We exhausted all of our medical resources on that mission. Also, their water source is contaminated with dead bodies. We have secured thousands of water purifier tablets and will be returning tomorrow to deliver more medical care and the water purifier pills. It is a long hike into the mountains.
Yesterday while driving on the street I saw a man with a blue shirt. Looking closely I saw that it was Claudony Francois, the NAPS leader for Haiti. He has been working for NAPS for the last 12 years since NAPS’ first mission trip to Haiti. I was talking with him just minutes before the earthquake hit but the call cut off. Despite all the millions of people in Port-au-Prince, I ran into him. God is good and He loves me.
More good news: the children are smiling again. See the photos
